‘When We Were Young’ is a book that focuses on a couple’s love story – both sensual and passionate at a time in the early 1970s when life was simple and carefree . The book brings back cherished memories of love, freedom, and innocence. What makes this book distinct from any other book though is that it is not a narrative story, instead, it is a photographic tale of the love and intimacy of both the authors when they were young. Every page is a photograph, every photograph tells a story, every story a tale of love.
The book is a joint project of Douglas Kirkland and wife, Francoise, who are married for 48 years now. Douglas is a renowned celebrity photographer who has captured iconic portraits of famous people like Marilyn Monroe, Elizabeth Taylor, and John Lennon, to name only a few of the many great stars in the world he has worked with. He has also worked on the set of more than a hundred fifty movies.
In the book,’ When We Were Young’, the photographs were taken by Douglas in the summer of 1972 when he spent days photographing a young couple who had accurately represented the young Douglas and Francoise. The illustrations are snapshots of Francoise’s brother, Nicolas and his girlfriend, Caroline, taken in France. Nevertheless, it is still a clear depiction of the authors’ love story. In every picture of the book, a short poetry was written by Francoise which is in fact a representation of the true-to-life romance of their young selves.
